Mesothelioma carries a poor prognosis
Because its symptoms are vague and its onset can be slow, mesothelioma carries a poor prognosis, with a median survival time of only 6 to 18 months. Diffuse malignant mesothelioma is an extremely aggressive disease, and the prognosis is very poor, both for pleural (lung) mesothelioma and peritoneal cancer.
Pleural mesothelioma is a rapidly fatal asbestos-associated malignancy with a median survival time of less than one year following diagnosis. Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma, appearing in some 70% of diagnosed cases. Pleural thickening gradually contracts the breathing space, causing shortness of breath—often the first symptom for pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma, what is it?
Pleural mesothelioma, also known as mesothelioma of the pleura, is a tumor of the lining surrounding the lungs. There are two types of pleural mesothelioma: benign and malignant. Benign pleural mesothelioma is a non-cancerous tumor that has not spread to other organs of the body.
Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs. In the advanced stages of pleural mesothelioma, the cancer may spread to other nearby organs, including the heart, abdomen, and lymph nodes. Currently, the prognosis for those diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma is not good. Many patients die within six months of diagnosis.

The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include....
The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include shortness of breath, weight loss, coughing, chest pain under the rib cage, and painful breathing (pleurisy). Surgery can also be used to relieve fluid buildup, allowing the patient with pleural mesothelioma to breathe easier. As with any cancer, the earlier mesothelioma is detected and treated, the greater your chances of long-term survival will be.
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer (malignancy) that most frequently arises from the cells lining the sacs of the chest (the pleura) or the abdomen. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form, often presenting with symptoms in the chest area. Peritoneal mesothelioma is much less common. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that attacks the mesothelium. Pleural mesothelioma attacks the lining protecting the cavity around the lungs. This is a very serious condition from which it is very difficult to escape. Pleural mesothelioma, is cancer of the lungs. Malignant and benign symptoms vary including pleural effusion, chest pain, cough and shortness of breath.

Patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma have...
Patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma have cancerous growths in the tissues surrounding their lungs. Pleural mesothelioma is the medical term for the lethal mesothelioma lung cancer caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. There is no benign form of this disease; all occurrences of mesothelioma are malignant.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a lethal disease and little is known. about prognostic factors.
PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA - What is pleural mesothelioma?
Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the cells that make up the pleura or lining around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs. The first step in detecting pleural mesothelioma is, typically, a chest x-ray or CT scan. This is often followed by a bronchoscopy. There is as yet no known cure for malignant mesothelioma. The prognosis depends on various factors, including the size and stage of the tumor, and the extent of the tumor.

Pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma?
Because of this, when most people speak of “mesothelioma”, they are usually speaking of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Studies of patients with pleural mesothelioma show that important prognostic factors include the stage of the cancer, the age and health of the patient. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is the least common form and presents with the worst prognosis.
The prognosis, therapy (including types of chemotherapy) and treatment choices are similar whether the cancer is pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma. For many asbestosis patients the mesothelioma prognosis is maybe hopeful. For many asbestosis patients the mesothelioma prognosis is may be hopeful. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma. Many factors may be involved in determining the survival rate for this aggressive cancer; some are better understood than others. Unfortunately, patients who have been diagnosed with peritoneal or pleural mesothelioma are often advised of a grim mesothelioma prognosis.

The life expectancy of a mesothelioma patient is.......
Typically the most important variable determining the prognosis and life expectancy of a mesothelioma patient is the stage of the cancer when it is diagnosed. The survival rates were as follows: 24% of people with pleural mesothelioma and 34% diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma were still alive one year after diagnosis. Mesothelioma is associated with exposure to asbestos, especially blue asbestos. Age, tumour histology, tumour stage at diagnosis and performance status have been shown to be independent prognostic factors.
Medical experts have been unable to definitively assess the prognosis of pleural mesothelioma partly because there are relatively few cases and it is so difficult to diagnose. Studies of pleural mesothelioma patients show that important prognostic factors include stage of cancer, age, and histology. Nodal status is an important prognostic factor. Studies have shown the median survival of patients with malignant pleural disease is 16 months.
