The life expectancy of a mesothelioma patient is.......

Typically the most important variable determining the prognosis and life expectancy of a mesothelioma patient is the stage of the cancer when it is diagnosed. The survival rates were as follows: 24% of people with pleural mesothelioma and 34% diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma were still alive one year after diagnosis. Mesothelioma is associated with exposure to asbestos, especially blue asbestos. Age, tumour histology, tumour stage at diagnosis and performance status have been shown to be independent prognostic factors.

Medical experts have been unable to definitively assess the prognosis of pleural mesothelioma partly because there are relatively few cases and it is so difficult to diagnose. Studies of pleural mesothelioma patients show that important prognostic factors include stage of cancer, age, and histology. Nodal status is an important prognostic factor. Studies have shown the median survival of patients with malignant pleural disease is 16 months.
